Join AAU historians Bill Eddleston and Jakub Drabik as they discuss the 250th US anniversary and how to assess the country at this national milestone.

The President of the United States has announced that official celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence ought to “inspire a renewed love for American history.”

What does that history actually tell us about America? Is it a story of liberty and hope, of hypocrisy and violence, or some very human mixture of these extremes?

Come to learn about history and this topic which has become so polarizing.

Universities in the Czech Republic and in Western countries face common problems. Although the number of universities, students and teachers have increased hugely over the last thirty years, one can observe uncertainty, pressure, and fear at these institutions.

Join this History & Philosophy Seminar with AAU Lecturer Jakub Jirsa who argues part of this problem is that universities are bodies foreign to contemporary popular democracies.

The separation between universities and their social and political environment creates an atmosphere of mutual distrust, leading to the institutions regulating the operation of universities imposing controlling measures foreign to the working of universities, such as metrical evaluation. In the end, however, this only increases the distrust and uncertainty mentioned above.

Come discuss the questions of trust and control.
